The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is appealing to people planning maintenance or building work to their properties to be aware of nesting birds.
With Spring approaching, now is the time when many birds begin to build their nests and lay eggs. Unfortunately, this coincides with many people carrying out repairs to their properties after winter.
A spokesperson for DAFF says, "A little thought well ahead of the works can avoid conflict with wildlife and avert later delays in dealing with preventable problems.
"If birds have nested previously where works are planned, then consider undertaking the work at a time of year which will not affect nesting birds.
"If works are needed during the nesting period, block access to birds before they begin building a nest so that they will not be in residence when the works are planned to take place, but be careful not to block any birds inside.
"Bat roost exit points should not be blocked: get advice from the Department before undertaking works at a bat roost.
The destruction of bird nests whilst they are in use or being built is an offence under the Wildlife Act.
"This is the case whether the action is intentional or reckless.
"A little care and planning can help a great deal to protect our wildlife within a human-dominated environment."
