by isleofman.com 8th March 2010

A worker in the Island's Social Security office has been convicted of benefit fraud.

Patricia Dunne has been sentenced to 150 hours community service for claiming Family Income Supplement while living with her partner.

She was also ordered to pay costs of ?250 when she appeared in court on Friday.

A DHSS spokesman says the case sends a clear message to the public there's no escape for benefit cheats.

The DHSS special investgation unit began looking into Patrica's Dunne circumstances last June, after it received information her partner was living with her.

She failed to declare that while claiming Family Income Supplement.

The case was referred to the Attorney General's Chambers and Miss Dunne, who worked in the Social Security division, was suspended from duty. She still faces disciplinary action.

Political member for Social Security, Bill Henderson, says the case demonstrates that anyone caught cheating the benefit system can expect the department to take the strongest action against them.

He's reminded the public they can give information in confidence to the free Benefit Fraud Line operated by the DHSS. The number 0808 1624 043.
