Minimum wage increase announced

by isleofman.com 5th March 2010

The minimum wage is to rise at the end of the month, the Department of Trade and Industry has announced.

But it’ll only be a one per cent increase – and the annual rate of inflation is currently more than five-times that figure.

The DTI says the new rates come into effect on April 1 and will be ?4.67 an hour for 16-year-olds, ?5.24 for 17-year-olds and ?6.10 for over-18s.

It’s the first rise for 18 months, after the Minimum Wage Committee carried out a study to see how a rise would affect businesses and their employees.

Trade and industry minister David Cretney says since 2002 the minimum wage has gone up 49%, compared to inflation of 34%.
