Young Musicians Take Folk Masterclass

by isleofman.com 4th March 2010

Pupils at Peel Clothworkers School had a special visit today (Thursday 4th March) from two major talents from the folk-rock world.

Ric Sanders (left), virtuoso fiddle player with Fairport Convention, visited the school ahead of this evening's concert at the Gaiety Theatre.

With him was guitarist and comedian Keith Donnelly, who will providing support at tonight's show along with fellow musician Flossie Malavialle.

Together, they played lively instrumentals to the children and sang light-hearted songs which allowed for maximum audience participation!

The gathering consisted of budding guitarists, as well as other children who are learning the violin, clarinet, recorder and drums.

Taking questions 'from the floor', Ric - whose musical career has spanned several genres and countries - described how he had not taken up the violin until he was 17 and told them that "you can pick up music at any time - it's never too late".  He also stressed the importance of regular practice - and making it fun.

Keith, in turn, told how he had taken up the guitar because he wanted to make up his own songs.  Delighting the young audience with jokes and impromptu songs about chocolate and custard, it was clear that he chose the right path in life!

The workshop was co-ordinated by teacher Jenny Gale with full support from Headteacher Simon Jones.

After the workshop, Keith praised the children: "The kids were absolutely wonderful. I've done workshops all over the world and you find that if you give the children a chance to be enthusiastic, they will be".

To add to the enjoyment, as part of World Book Day, the pupils and teachers alike were in costumes inspired by characters from popular children's stories.

A limited number of tickets (priced ?20) are still available for the Fairport Convention concert this evening. Call the Villa Gaiety box office on 600555 or call in to the Manx Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal (open until 6pm).  Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm.
