Nominate Your Choice for 'Tomorrow's Farmer'

by isleofman.com 2nd March 2010

Following on from the success of 2010's inaugural 'Tomorrow's Farmer' Awards, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is now seeking nominations for 2010.

In both categories - the Tomorrow’s Farmers Award and the Judges Special Award for a Young Farmer - the award seeks to recognise and reward farmers who are committed to the future of agriculture on the Island.

The award is being sponsored by Shoprite, whose Marketing Manager Adam Burnett said, "As the largest supporter of the Island’s Agricultural Industry, we are delighted to continue our support for Manx Farmers and Producers by sponsoring the awards again this year.

"Driving Gross National Income is now of prime importance to our economy and locally produced items sold by Shoprite deliver maximum economic benefit for the Island.  We intend to increase our range of Manx produced products and we see these awards as a way of encouraging innovation and customer focus.

"We continue to work closely with our large extended 'family' of local producers and distribution partners on the Island, to grow their businesses and the Island’s economy."

Minister Phil Gawne, MHK said, "These awards not only aim to showcase the best farmers on the Island but provide an opportunity to share stories of best practice, to inspire others and influence the public about the role that farmers play in today’s society.

"The award is a chance to celebrate all that is good about farming and give individuals the chance to shine".

Last years’ winners were Gelling’s Eggs, Robert and Catriona Morrey at Ballacorey, Kneale Brothers at Lough Dhoo and Darren and Kath Cleator at Jurby.  These farmers cannot be nominated for an award this year.

The judges will be: the Political Member for Agriculture, the SAC Agricultural Adviser, the President of the Manx NFU and the President of the Royal Manx Agricultural Show.  Shortlisted entries will be selected and entrants will then be visited by the judges in July.

The winners will be revealed at the Award ceremony, which will take place at the “Meet the Buyer” evening at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show, on Friday 6th August 2010.

How to Make Your Nomination

Judges will be looking for the farmers who best demonstrate their forward thinking and will assess entries against the following factors: 1) The efficiency and profitability of the farming enterprise; 2) The market focus of the enterprise; 3) The contribution the farm makes to local food promotion; and 4) Measures taken to diversify and undertake conservation on the farm.

Nominations should be made before the 31st March 2010, giving a brief reason for the chosen nomination.

They should be sent to Audrey Fowler, Marketing Officer, DAFF, Rose House, 51 – 59 Circular Road, Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 1AZ or email: audrey.fowler(at)gov.im
