Mark Cavendish stepped up his return to fitness by claiming a podium place at the Clasica de Almeria on Sunday.
The HTC-Columbia sprinter pulled out his trademark kick over the closing stages in southern Spain but had to settle for second place as Theo Bos was able to fend off his challenge at the finish line.
The race marked Cavendish's first one-day appearance of the year after his early-season calendar was disrupted by a dental problem picked up over the winter.
The result aids his preparations for his defence of the Milan-San Remo title later this month.
Australian Graeme Brown was third.
