Renewable energy schemes will only be adopted by the Manx Electricty Authority once they've proved their worth elsewhere.
Chairman of the MEA, Quintin Gill, says in the current economic climate, the Isle of Man cannot be a 'test bed' for technologies still being developed.
He says in the long term, the authority may harness a range of energy sources - including renewables such as wind and wave power and so-called energy crops.
The potential for bio-mass fuels to provide more of the Island's energy needs will be debated at a public meeting of the Positive Action Group on Monday evening.
Mr Gill says the idea deserves to be looked at but it has yet to prove viable.
