Teen jailed for assaulting secure unit staff

by isleofman.com 25th February 2010

A teenager’s been jailed after assaulting staff at the secure unit at White Hoe.

George James Langton admitted four charges of common assault and one of attempting to damage equipment at the DHSS facility.

Deputy High Bailiff Alistair Montgomery was told the 17-year-old had only just been released from prison and dropped off at the unit by police when he kicked and spat at social workers.

The court heard Langton had wanted to be returned to prison rather than stay at the unit.

Jane Hughes, prosecuting, said the boy had been released from prison on February 15 and taken to White Hoe by police, where he was to stay until his 18th birthday in March.

But after officers left, he spat at one worker and kicked three others, and threw a walkie-talkie against a wall.

His advocate said the offences were committed as a plan to have him returned to the jail, and asked for a suspended supervision order to support him.

But Mr Montgomery said his behaviour was appalling and, noting the teenager had 17 pages of previous convictions, said custody was inevitable.

He jailed Langton for 150 days, and said if he did not accept the help being offered, he faced a bleak future.
