MLC's question on internet sex case

by isleofman.com 23rd February 2010

The appearance of the Civil Partnership Bill has attracted all the headlines ahead of today's today's sitting of the House of Keys, but there are also four questions for oral answer and the same number for written reply.

Among other things there are calls for a unified front on returning the Reciprocal Health Agreement with the United Kingdom, financial commitment to the 'clean emissions TT' and the abolition of prescription charges for cancer patients.

There's also a question in the Legislative Council, from Juan Turner, MLC.

He will ask a member of the Department of Home Affairs about a recent court case in which an Isle of Man resident was convicted in the UK of an internet sexual offence against a child.

Mr Turner wants to know the cost to the Island's taxpayer and what the estimated cost of the case would have been, including those of imprisonment, if it had been dealt with wholly on Manx soil.

The question appears to relate to James Barefield, a former Head of English at QE2 High School in Peel, who was jailed for twelve months at Southwark Crown Court, for online sex offences under UK law.

The public sitting of the Legislative Council begins at 10.30am.

The House of Keys gets down to business half an hour earlier, with full coverage of question time on Manx Radio's AM 1368 service.
