Edgewater Associates B (90) vs Gamers (135)
Gamers put up a very strong team against a weakend Edgewater hit by man-flu. Captain for the home team, Douglas Jacobsson, had to step up as no. 1 and play the very skilled Ashley Sykes. Jacobsson was kept moving all over the court and had to work very hard for every point. Sykes won in straight games but Jacobsson managed to get a very respectable 24 points. Next Carl Albrigt played the experienced John Knight and he did very well indeed. Albrigt grabbed the first with some fine squash taking Knight a bit by surprise. Where after John upped his game in the next 3 games and won quite comfortably. Subbing at no. 3 for Edgewater, Gordon Beresford did a splendid job against Mike Hebden, who managed to win 3-1 despite all games being very closely fought.
Island Restorations (127) vs MAS (121)
Team Sponsor Colin Crawshaw for Island Restorations was first on court against Steve Morley of MAS plc. In a game where both players where content on hitting the ball back to each other it was Morley who took the first 15 - 11. After that Crawshaw was not so generous and won the next three games (15-5, 15-9, 15-9) to give his team a 3-1 win. Next on court were Dave O`Neill and Roy Norman. Norman took the first two games of this encounter for MAS (15-7, 15-14) before O’neil gained some revenge taking the next two easily to level it up (15-5, 15-8). Norman had obviously been saving his energy as the fifth and final game went to 13-13 before O’Neil used his trademark shots to close out the game and give Island Restorations another win on the night. The final match on court saw Paul Barnett take on Island number 2 and sponsor of MAS plc Malcolm Levy. After a tight start to the match the MAS player was able to take the first game comfortably 15-8. The second game saw Barnett take control and get to a 13-6 lead before Levy got his act together. However the Island Restorations player was able to level the match up with a 15-11 win. The third saw Barnett dominate again and get to a 14-11 position before Levy mounted a challenge that was sufficient to win the game 15-14. After the effort, and his disappointment at losing the third, Barnett was unable to mount a challenge in the fourth with Levy running out a 15-7 winner to give MAS plc their only win on the night.
B League
Verve Consultants (179) vs Jewel Tech (223)
Phil Shaw and Mark Stratford kicked off the evening in ridiculously cold conditions, the latter taking the match quite easily 3-0. Then Charles Pimblett took on Garrett du Toit, and a similar result ensued. Next up was a thrilling and noisy encounter between Mark Grace and Carl Albright. Grace probably gave in at 15-14 in the fifth just to give his ears a rest. Andrew Walker got Verve off to a good start taking the first against Shaun Callow 15-4, Callow then upped a gear to win the next 3, Last up was the tight pairing of Phil Challenger and Gordon Beresford, Beresford won the first before Challenger came through to take following 3 games 15-14/15-14/15-14.
C League
Habib European Bank Lions (154) vs Apollo Consultancy (225)
Playing the best team in the League without their regular no 1 was always going to be a tough task for Habib European Bank Lions and the match score of 154 -225 showed how tough it was. However there were some very creditable performances from the young Lions. At 5, left-handed Ian Kelly showed he is adapting to life with a racket in his hand rather than a football at his feet and was too strong for George Griffiths. Similarly Apollo skipper Steve Thatcher, after a post-Xmas pud, dispatched Alex Cave 3-0. Liam Quinn did well to win his first game against Peter Squires-Wright before narrowly losing the second 15-13 and then the match 3-1. Ben Atkinson also took the first against Paul Devo before Devo used his cold-court skills to keep the rallies short and go 2-1 up. Devo forged ahead in the fourth, only for a determined Atkinson to come back to 10-10. As a 5th looked on the cards, Paul found some energy from somewhere to win the last 5 points. Game of the night saw Zaeem Jafri narrowly go down 3-2 to John Coppell. Jafri led in games, 1-0 and 2-1, until John finally remembered to hit his drop shots above the tin and won the match.
