Cost of importing labour increases

A doubling of the fee for an Isle of Man work permit is being defended by the trade and industry minister.

David Cretney told Tynwald that in the current economic climate, local firms must be encouraged to go for Isle of Man workers whenever possible.

He said he had also considered calls for a two-tier cost system, and reminded members a review of work permit legislation was on going.

Tynwald agreed to the rise, from ?25 to ?50.

Mr Cretney believes it's a fair increase, given the length of time since the fee was last changed:
