The Department of Agriculture is pleased to announce the re-opening of part of the Farm and Horticultural Improvement Scheme from Monday 22nd February for boundary fencing applications only.
Over recent years, particularly since the rate was increased in April 2008, farmers have made great strides in replacing fencing around the boundaries of their holdings. This has many benefits: control of stock, replacement of unsightly and insecure fencing, and importantly the improvement of farm bio-security, therefore decreasing the risk of disease spread between farms.
Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne explained, "This recognises the good work that farmers have been doing to improve bio-security on their farms and consequently the food security of the Isle of Man.
"I am hopeful that we will be able to provide a FHI Scheme in the coming financial year; although farmers must appreciate that it will not be as wide ranging as has previously been the case. I look forward to further consultations with the Manx NFU to understand the agricultural community's priorities in this area."
The basic criteria for new applications to the Scheme will be that only one application will be permissible per farmer and it can be for a maximum of 2000 metres of fencing.
