Zoe's big day

by isleofman.com 15th February 2010

Manx snowboardcrosser Zoe Gillings goes for glory at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver on Tuesday.

Zoe from Ronague, who made her Olympic debut for Britain four years ago in Turin reaching the quarter-finals, is hoping to go even better on the Canadian slopes.

She was 15th last time – the event pits four snowboarders head-to-head in each race.

Qualification is from 6pm on Tuesday and there’ll be more people watching events unfold on TV than planned as snowboarding fans have been told to stay away from Cypress Mountain after heavy rain made part of the spectator area unsafe.

The rain washed away up to a foot of snow in the general admission standing area, which could potentially have caused spectators to sink through what little snow was left and into the straw base below.
