The Isle of Man has signed up as a partner to help celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity.

The United Nations has declared 2010 as the year to celebrate life on earth and the everyday value of biodiversity.

Events will be run throughout by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, in partnership with various other organisations on the Island.

They will aim to raise awareness of the variety of life on the Island, the importance of protecting biodiversity and how habitats that shape our landscapes are home to a wealth of plants and wildlife.

The Island isn't currently a signatory to the International Convention on Biological Diversity which has been signed by 191 countries around the world.

However, Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne has given a commitment to do all he can to 'extend the provisions of the CBD agreement to the Island' as soon as possible.

He says this will send an important message to the international community that the Island is serious about protecting and promoting its biodiversity and its natural heritage.
