Tesco inquiry to start

by isleofman.com 9th February 2010

Controversial proposals to expand the Tesco store in Douglas will be put to the test today (Tuesday).

It’s the start of the Tesco inquiry which will open at 9.30am at the Sefton Hotel.

The hearing, before inspector David Bushby, is expected to last up to a fortnight.

Plans to expand the supermarket and create a 100,000 square feet store have met a mixed reaction with up to 250 jobs potentially created but also concern such a move would impact negatively and lead to the closure of some Island retailers.

A leading figure in Northern Ireland’s Independent Retail Trade Association, Glyn Roberts, is predicting job losses and the closure of some independent retailers if the proposals eventually get the green light.
