A two-million pound scheme to replace the fire pumps on Battery Pier could be given the go-ahead next week.
Transport Minister David Anderson is to ask Tynwald for the funding.
They will replace and upgrade the existing pumps and main which were installed in 1981 as part of the outer breakwater construction.
Standards required for such pumps have changed following the Buncefield oil depot explosion in the UK in 2005.
The current pumps have a total water requirement of 9000 litres per minute.
The new pumps which will use sea water will have a total requirement of 20,000 litres per minute.
Marine Operations Centre at the Sea Terminal will monitor the area around the clock and the Isle of Man Fire Service will also be able to operate the system remotely.
If approved by Tynwald work would start next month, with the pumps being delivered in August and commissioned in November.
