The funeral of a man regarded as the 'grandfather' of the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service took place this lunchtime (Friday).
Michael Ventre was a firefighter between 1955 and 1979, when he retired as assistant divisional officer.
He was honoured by the Fire Fighters Charity in 2007, receiving a lifetime achievement award from Michael Aspel at an event in Cambridge.
Mr Aspel described it as a 'privilege' to meet a man like the 79-year-old from Onchan.
Mr Ventre's coffin was carried by an aerial ladder applaince from Douglas Fire Station to the town hall earlier.
The procession left there just before midday, led by the Brigade Standard with many fire service personnel following on foot.
The appliance, still bearing the coffin, brought up the rear with the funeral cars as they made their way up Prospect Hill to St Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Hill Street for the service.
Speaking about Mr Ventre on his receipt of the award three years ago, chief fire officer Brian Draper said he made a significant contribution to the fire service during his long career and continued to do so towards the welfare of retired members after stepping down.
