'Vigorous debate' expected on Douglas rates

by isleofman.com 27th January 2010

Douglas residents find out today how much their rates are set to rise.

Council leader David Christian will present the budget at the meeting in the council chamber, during which the rate will be set, ahead of the new financial year in April.

Mr Christian says he anticipates a 'vigorous debate' given the effects of the economic downturn, changes to the Island's VAT revenue sharing agreement, and the impact of costs being transferred from the Manx Government onto local authorities.

Last month, the council voted narrowly against co-funding the planned ?3.5 million refurbishment of the Bowl, despite assurances from Mr Christian that it could be supported without an increase in rates for the next twelve months.

Start time for meeting: 10.30am.
