Stolen flares discharged near airport

by isleofman.com 22nd January 2010

The theft and apparent setting-off of some distress flares has prompted a police investigation in the south of the Island.

Thieves got into a boat outside the greenkeeper's hut at Castletown Golf Links and took four maritime flares.

It happened some time between 3pm on Wednesday and 10am today (Friday).

Police say some of the flares were apparently discharged in the area, after they were taken.

They say: "They were let-off in a coastal location and also in the area of the airport, and all emergency services take a very dim view of false distress calls of this type.

"Several items were seized for forensic examination, and it's hoped this will lead us to identify the offenders."

Anybody with information is asked to ring the police station in Port Erin, on 832222.
