Look out for red collection buckets!

A big fundraising effort for the Haiti earthquake appeal is getting under way.

The Manx Rapid Response Network is coordinating an all-Island street collection today and tomorrow to boost funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee Haiti appeal.

The collections are being coordinated through the One World Centre and will see volunteers with red collecting buckets in Douglas, Peel, Port Erin and Ramsey over the two days.

Cheryl Cousins from the One World Centre says the Rapid Response Network only ever swings into action in the event of a DEC appeal.

She told Manx Radio: "This type of appeal is called when the 13 member agencies, including Oxfam, the Red Cross and Christian Aid, have assessed that a disaster is on such a scale and of such urgency that it requires swift international humanitarian assistance."

She says charities in the Isle of Man have seen incredible generosity already from local residents, and know of a number of individuals and organisations fundraising in aid of Haiti.

Ms Cousins says the street collections provide people with an easy way to make donations if they would like to contribute.
