Mixed news for ratepayers in the south

Malew Commissioners say there will be no increase in the parish rates for the forthcoming financial year.

They will remain at 152 pence in the pound, after increases in audit fees and waste disposal charges were offset by a rise in revenue, efficiency savings and good budgeting.

However, the commissioners in nearby Castletown say their rates will be increasing by 4.9 per cent to 320 pence in the pound.

They say they tried very hard to bring in only a marginal increase, but faced higher charges for waste disposal and the reduction in subsidy from 90 to 71 per cent.

Chairman Alwyn Collister says a penny rate increase only brings in ?2,000 and the board has to be open and honest about any changes:
