To help the relief effort in Haiti, the children, staff and parents of Scoill Vallajeelt are working together to raise enough money to send ‘ShelterBoxes’ to the earthquake torn country.
A relief charity (ShelterBox) will use the money the school donates to put together boxes that contain all the essential items necessary for an extended family (up to 10 people) to live under shelter and be able to cook, wash and generally survive in the first few weeks and months that are so important following a major disaster.
Children, staff and parents started the week with an ambitious target of raising ?1000 - enough money to purchase two ‘ShelterBoxes’.
"I am delighted that we have exceeded our target through the generosity of our caring community. Caring is one of our core values at Vallajeelt and our community have certainly demonstrated their compassion for the people of Haiti by what they have done," said Headteacher Adrian Shorthouse.
As part of the fundraising effort, cake stalls, raffles and sponsored skipping events were organised by the children and their parents during the week.
"I wanted to help the people in Haiti. They are suffering so much. Me and my friends wanted to do something for them," said Amy Corlett, a pupil at Scoill Vallajeelt.
Community donations ranging from a few pence from children’s pocket money to an anonymous donor of ?500, combined to help the school order three ShelterBoxes, just five days after the appeal was launched.
Three ShelterBoxes will be ordered on Friday (21st January) and then tracked through the charities website to enable the school to connect directly with the people they are helping.
