Were You at Pink Floyd's Palace Gig?

by isleofman.com 19th January 2010

A researcher is appealing for people to come forward with information, photographs and other memorabilia about Pink Floyd's 1967 concert at the Palace Ballroom in Douglas.

Russell Beecher from Essential Works says, "In 1967, a young group from London played shows all over the UK on their way to becoming famous.  One of the gigs they played was on the Isle of Man on July 18th.

"When they played the Isle of Man gig, they were still putting the finishing touches to their legendary debut album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'.  'Piper' was a psychedelic masterpiece and had been recorded at Abbey Road as The Beatles recorded 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' in the adjacent studio in Abbey Road.

"These two albums would go to become the soundtrack to the Summer of Love in 1967 and Pink Floyd's fame grew and grew.  The album was the result of the genius of the band's early leader; Syd Barrett (pictured with guitar).  Syd was to leave Pink Floyd in early 1968 to be replaced by David Gilmour.

"Pink Floyd, in this new incarnation, would go on to conquer the musical world but many still regard the band's early work with Syd Barrett as epoch-making.

"I am currently researching and devloping a visual history of Syd Barrett and am looking for any photos, fliers, tickets and anything else of visual relevance from the gig on the Isle of Man."
