Bemahague expansion approved

by isleofman.com 19th January 2010

More than ?1 million has been added to the cost of the new Bemahague School in Onchan.

Tynwald has voted the extra cash to create an enlarged sport hall and changing facility within the development, which will be the new lower school for St Ninian's.

The original scheme allowed for a sports hall which could accomodate six courts, but that has been extended to allow for eight.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Martyn Quayle said the scheme would ease the pressure on the National Sports Centre for facilities for five-a-side events.

During a debate, Education Minister Anne Craine said government should maximise the potential of all new sports facilities, which had sometimes been built on too small a scale.

The scheme has added ?1,048,000 to an overall cost of ?29.6 million.
