Bright Stars Win Dream Scholarships

by isleofman.com 18th January 2010

Isle of Man Sport Aid has announced that five of the Isle of Man’s brightest up and coming sporting prospects have been awarded Chase Your Dream scholarships funded through the Gubay Fund for Sporting Excellance.

These scholarships enable outstanding sporting talent to combine training and studying at a UK based college or Sporting Academy.  Recipients are: Badminton player Josh Green studying at Wiltshire College/Bath University; Swimmer Grant Halsall at Plymouth College; Tennis star Billy Harris at the WIN Academy; Ladies footballer Elizabeth Stanley at Arsenal Ladies Academy/Oaklands College and athlete Lauren Whelan at the UK Athletics Race Walking Academy/Leeds City College.

At a recent presentation, Mr Christopher Barr, on behalf of Mr Albert Gubay, congratulated the athletes on their achievements to date and emphasised how pleased he is to be able to help them strive to reach their sporting goals.  The Gubay Fund for Sporting Excellence was established in 2006 following a large donation from Mr Albert Gubay.  It aims to provide the Island’s exceptional sporting talent with the opportunity to train and compete off Island and that money is not a barrier to success.
