Western Civic Amenity site - get a closer look

by isleofman.com 16th January 2010

There's a chance for the public to look around the redeveloped Western Civic Amenity site tomorrow (Sunday).

A petition was started against Department of Local Government and the Environment plans to redevelop the St. John's site last summer but work went ahead in August and has been completed in budget and ahead of schedule.

Before the official opening on Monday the public are being welcomed to look around the site this weekend - but they are being reminded they can't yet dump their waste.

The open day will allow the public to examine the new facilities at the redeveloped Western Civic Amenity site before it opens officially on Monday - five weeks ahead of schedule.

The works were initiated in August to make the site easier to use for the public and more efficient to run for the workers.

People using the site will now drive onto an elevated area above skips so waste can be thrown directly in, instead of having to be loaded using a mechanical digger at the end of the day.

The site has also more than doubled in size to 3,600 square metres to allow it to cope with expected increased volumes of waste and to prevent queues from forming.
