Fire tenders save lives in Romania

More remote communities in Romania are hoping for help from the Isle of Man.

Decommissioned fire tenders, including a 'Simon Snorkel' hydraulic platform, were driven out to the eastern European country by volunteers from the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service, in April 2008.

Local firemen in the village of Jirish, who had been using horse-drawn carts, were then trained in their use.

Former deputy chief fire officer Bruce Kirkham says the equipment already in Romania has been saving lives:
