Island asked to help quake victims

by isleofman.com 13th January 2010

Oxfam Isle of Man has launched an urgent appeal to help the people of Haiti, following yesterday's catastrophic earthquake.

The Caribbean country, one of the world's poorest nations, was hit by its worst quake for 200 years, measuing 7.0 on the Richter scale, last night.

A true picture of the devastation is only just starting to emerge, but thousands are missing, feared dead, with up to three million affected by the disaster, according to the Red Cross.

Water and electricity supplies have been knocked out, as have phone lines.

Oxfam Isle of Man manager Sue Burnham says it's a serious situation (play audio file):

Donations can be made online at oxfam.org.uk, or at the the Oxfam shop in Castle Street, Douglas.

The shop is next open from 9.30am on Thursday.
