Asbestos warning to tradesmen

The Health and Safety Inspectorate has issued a stern warning following the conviction of two local tradesmen of handling asbestos without a licence.

Mark Pemberton and Francis 'Frankie' Howard, who trade as Isle of Man Roofing Services, were found to have damaged asbestos cladding on a property two years ago.

An investigation by the inspectorate led to the court appearance earlier this week, in which Pemberton and Howard were fined ?3,000 and ?2,000 respectively and ordered to pay costs.

Senior health and safety inspector Ron Ellison says older houses are particularly likely to contain the material (play audio file):

The Health and Safety Inspectorate says all cases involving asbestos will be taken extremely seriously.
