Exercise expected to 'prove its worth'

The education minister says she is pleased with the number of teachers who chose to take last Monday off, after being offered the chance to do so by her department.

That's despite 43 per cent of them ignoring the request and turning up for work, as advised by the National Union of Teachers.

The scheme was announced at short notice last month, and the department will use the 'banked days' to provide cover for absent staff, later in the school year.

Mrs Craine is apologising for making the move so late in the day, and doesn't think her department will be making a habit of it:
