Councillor welcomes rejection of Bowl scheme

by isleofman.com 9th January 2010

The Bowl stadium will not be revamped with the involvement of Douglas Borough Council.

At a second special meeting on the issue, members were told the scheme could be implemented without increasing the rates, in the first year at least.

When the vote was taken they were evenly split, and the Mayor, Michael Gelling, used his casting vote to end the local authority's involvement in the ?3.5 million scheme.

Councillor David Ashford was one of those who welcomed the outcome (play audio file):

A second motion, brought by Councillor Carol Malarkey, on transferring the Bowl to government ownership, was passed by ten votes to eight.
