Treasury Minister Allan Bell says he will do what he can to protect those on low incomes from any cutbacks in services or benefits which may be announced in next month's budget.
The plight of the less well-off in society was highlighted at Christmas by the Lord Bishop, who said they shouldn't have to suffer.
Mr Bell says it's too early to say what measures he will announce, but he will try to ensure those with the least in life aren't hit (play audio file):
The minister has also been considering the impact on the Isle of Man of an increase in VAT to 20 per cent or more, which many people believe would happen if the Conservatives won the forthcoming general election in the United Kingdom.
Mr Bell says it would bring more money into the Manx exchequer, but to some extent it would be a case of 'swings and roundabouts'.
