Dippers brave the elements!

by isleofman.com 1st January 2010

A peculiar tradition will be observed this afternoon, as Isle of Man residents welcome in the New Year by diving into the sea.

Some of the more hardy, or perhaps foolhardy, will immerse themselves not just once but repeatedly at different locations around the Island.

Peel, Laxey, Castletown, Port Erin and Port St Mary are among the places where dips are being staged.

Organiser of the Port Erin and Port St Mary events Lenny Conroy says it's worth taking part just to feel good (play audio file):

The dips at Peel, Laxey and Castletown are at 12 noon, and other times include Chapel Beach, Port St Mary (12.30pm); Inner Harbour, Port St Mary (1.15pm); Gansey Bay (2pm) and Port Erin Bay (2.45pm).
