'Island will rise to challenges ahead' - Brown

There's an upbeat message from the chief minister at the start of 2010.

Tony Brown says the Isle of Man faces many challenges, the most significant of which is balancing the books in the face of the greatly reduced revenue from VAT.

He says it will go through a difficult period as it adjusts to its new circumstances, but it will benefit from economic recovery in the United Kingdom and further afield, and he believes there are ways of replacing the lost income.

Mr Brown says there have been clouds on the horizon before, and the Island has pulled through by being imaginative and making the most of what it has.

However, he is warning local residents they will have to be prepared for change:
