Prisoners Give Christmas Hampers to Villagers

by isleofman.com 24th December 2009

Prisoners and prison officers hope to bring some festive cheer to Jurby with the distribution of thirteen Christmas hampers to elderly people living in the village.

The hampers are the result of the first Christmas Hamper Appeal launched at the prison in October.  Many prisoners chose to make regular cash donations to the appeal from their own funds, money which they earn or receive from friends or relatives.

Additionally, prison officers, staff and visitors contributed cash and food.

Deputy Governor Colin Ring co-ordinated the appeal.  He comments, "I hoped we’d have enough to put together six hampers but the generosity of prisoners and everyone concerned has meant we filled thirteen hampers.

"The hampers themselves were decorated by other prisoners and each one includes a Christmas card, handmade by prisoners.

"I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the prison to put something back into the community and the response to this has been wonderful.  It’s definitely been a great event and something we hope to repeat next year."

The hampers were handed over to Jurby’s Assistant Community Development Worker Julie King, who will distribute them to Jurby residents today and tomorrow.
