Pilot back on Island after ditching plane in sea

by isleofman.com 17th December 2009

The Manx pilot who ditched her plane off the Fylde coast yesterday escaped with little more than a broken fingernail.

Forty-eight-year-old Kate Burrows told Granada Reports she set off from Guernsey at around 10 o' clock yesterday morning to fly back to the Island.

At around 12.15, when she was flying close to Blackpool, she lost one of her engines.

The second failed just a few minutes later, 22 miles off the Fylde coast, as she tried to make it to the the seaside town's airport.

Within minutes of her ditching the plane rescue craft picked her up.

Then an RAF Sea King helicopter, which was scrambled from Anglesey, transported her to Blackpool Airport where an RAF paramedic continued to monitor her before her return to the Isle of Man.

Kate is now back home, recovering from her ordeal.
