Education Minister Anne Craine MHK has welcomed members of the new Education Council to their positions and outlined their important new roles.
The Education Council has been appointed by the independent Appointments Commission and replaces the popularly-elected Board of Education, which ceased to exist on 31st May 2009.
Members of the Education Council fulfil a number of duties, including advising the Department on educational policy; serving as governors on at least three governing bodies of the Department's schools; and making appointments to the Religious Education Advisory Committee and trustee bodies in respect of certain charities and endowments.
The Minister said, "I am very pleased to be able to formally welcome the members of the Education Council, who have recently had their positions confirmed by the Appointments Commission.
"Each of the members has a commitment to education and the standard of excellence that we strive to provide for our children in the Isle of Man.
"Coming from different walks of life, they will introduce new skills and knowledge to the roles that they will be carrying out and I welcome the varied experiences that they bring.
"The duties of a Council member are varied and not least in importance is the part they have to play as members of our schools’ governing bodies.
"I know that they will enjoy working with the schools. I thank them for putting themselves forward for appointment and hope that they will enjoy their time serving on the Education Council."
