Lieutenant Governor's term extended

by isleofman.com 15th December 2009

The Lieutenant Governor Sir Paul Haddacks is to stay on the Isle of Man for six months longer than expected.

His five year term of office, which was scheduled to end in October next year, has been extended until April 2011.

In Tynwald today Chief Minister Tony Brown explained the appointment of Sir Paul's successor has to be delayed while UK government business is suspended for the general election.

And that has the potential to derail the timetable and appointment process for Sir Paul's successor.

Confirmation of any appointment could be delayed still further if there is a change of government, ministers of Ministry of Justice officials.

Mr Brown said from both the UK and the Isle of Man's points of view it would be 'useful' if the appointment of a new lieutenant governor could be separated from any implications relating to the UK general election timetable.

Sir Paul's successor is expected to be swon in in late paril or early May 2011.
