Make debt collection easier, urges MHK

by isleofman.com 14th December 2009

A North Douglas MHK hopes he can put an end to people being 'ripped off' by unscrupulous traders who take advantage of an inefficient system of debt collection on the Island.

John Houghton's Private Member's Bill to improve the enforcement of civil debt recovery received unanimous support in the House of Key's last week.

His move follows complaints received by many MHK's about people being unable to locate funds owing to them.

He says the bureaucracy of the Data Protection Act means debtors are able to hide or live anonymously, causing difficulty for those who are trying to recover funds.
