MHK unhappy with planned drinking controls

by isleofman.com 9th December 2009

New laws designed to curb alcohol consumption by passengers on boats in Manx waters are being criticised by an MHK as an example of unnecessary interference by the state.

Rushen member Quintin Gill says a wide range of regulations were overdue for an update, but he's unhappy with a clause which would require passengers playing any part in controlling a vessel - even just handling a rope when the boat was being tied-up - to stay within the drink-drive limit.

He believes that could criminalise people who had had only one or two drinks on a leisure trip and presented no danger to themselves or others (play audio file):

The proposals are in the Harbours Bill, which had its third reading in the House of Keys this week.
