Chamber on Tesco expansion plans

by isleofman.com 8th December 2009

The Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce has joined the public debate surrounding the planned expansion of the Tesco store in Douglas, saying the scale of the proposed facility is the problem.

Yesterday, Douglas Council leader David Christian said if the expansion went ahead the capital could become a ghost town.

The Chamber of Commerce says the entire retail area of Ramsey could fit inside the expanded store, and it would have a major impact on the vitality and vibrance of Douglas in particular, but other town centres as well.

Chairman of the Retail Committee Steve Bradley says it isn't just a food issue (play audio file):

A public inquiry will consider Tesco's expansion plans early in the new year.
