Farm Conservation Challenge award winners

by isleofman.com 7th December 2009

Howard and Lorraine Quayle are the fifth winners of the annual Isle of Man Bank Farm Conservation Challenge.

The couple, who farm 175 acres at Ballahowin on the Braaid Road in St Mark's, received a cheque for ?350 and were presented with the bronze Chough Trophy, by Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne.

They have farmed Ballahowin for nine years and, among other things, have created a fenced nature reserve, in a field which has been converted into 60 allotments for use by members of the public.

Lorraine told our farming corresponedent John Kennaugh she was surprised they were chosen by the judges (play audio file):

There will be more on that story in Manx Radio's Countryside programme, just after 6pm on Tuesday.
