Finance questions continue

by isleofman.com 5th December 2009

The Island's public finances are once again the big topic at House of Keys questions this week but with an added environmental slant.

The possibility of extra taxes, particuarly ones which may reduce carbon emissions, are the subject of a question from Rushen MHK Juan Watterson for the Chief Minister.

Mr Watterson also asks Treasury Minister Allan Bell for a timetable for the preparation and publication of next year's budget.

North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson jumps on the 10:10 bandwagon and echoes the Isle of Man Friends of the Earth's recent challenge to Tynwald to cut its CO2 emissions by 10 per cent next year.

The Island's job sector is the subject of a trio of questions for DTI Minister David Cretney from Mr Henderson.

One asks if more can be done for local construction workers, by limiting the amount of positions taken by overseas workers.

Mr Henderson also wants to know if the DTI has an Economic Development Group.

Juan Watterson is asking how many people have been convicted or cautioned for using their mobile phone while driving since 2006 and what's being done to change people's attitudes to doing it.
