Ellan Vannin dead remembered

by isleofman.com 3rd December 2009

The Isle of Man and the people of Merseyside have been remembering those who lost their lives in the Ellan Vannin tragedy.

The Steam Packet vessel sank off the coast of Liverpool with the loss of all 35 crew and passengers on board, 100 years ago today.

This morning a special service was held on board the Mersey Ferry MV Snowdrop, which included the laying of wreaths on the water by Chief Minister Tony Brown and chairman of the Steam Packet Company Robert Quayle.

Those on board, including descendants of the victims, joined Hughie Jones of the folk group the Spinners as he sang his well known composition 'The Ellan Vannin Tragedy'.

The names of all of those who perished, including an infant whose full name isn't known, were read out by the Reverend Canon Bob Evans, MBE, and chief executive of Liverpool Seafarers' Centre John P Wilson.

Also included in the attached audio file is a clip of Alan Wingrove, whose great grandfather William Kelly lost his life in the tragedy:
