Island was deeply wounded by tragedy

by isleofman.com 3rd December 2009

Chief Minister Tony Brown and chairman of the Steam Packet Company Robert Quayle are in Liverpool today to remember those who died in one of the Island's worst ever maritime disasters.

The Steam Packet's Ellan Vannin foundered near Liverpool a hundred years ago today, and to commemorate the 35 passengers and crew who lost their lives a special ceremony will be held aboard a Mersey Ferry.

Wreaths will be laid near the spot where the vessel sank and Hughie Jones of the Spinners will perform the famous song he wrote about the tragedy.

Charles Guard of the Manx Heritage Foundation, who organised today’s event, says the ship's loss in 1909 left deep wounds in the Island's psyche (play audio file):

You can hear live coverage of the commemoration in Liverpool on Manx Radio, shortly after 10am.
