Alternative plans for 'Bowl money'

Some of the money earmarked for the Bowl redevelopment could still go towards enhancing the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games.

Douglas Council yesterday voted 10-6 not to use ?1.7 million of ratepayers' money to pay for the revamp, citing the current economic climate.

Following that decision, it was confirmed central government had pulled the plug on its half of the ?3.4 million scheme, which would have provided a showpiece venue for the games.

However, Tynwald will still debate the issue later this month and Tourism and Leisure Minister Martyn Quayle hopes some of the money planned for the Bowl can now be used towards providing enhanced facilities at the Ballafletcher complex:
