A verdict of accidental death has been recorded at an inquest into the death of a Port St Mary woman who died in a road accident on the Braaid to St Mark's Road three months ago.

Eighty-four-year-old Pamela Egee was taken to hospital after the car she was travelling in, driven by her 90-year-old husband George, left the road and plunged down an embankment.

She did not recover from her injuries and died a day after the accident, on September 30.

The inquest heard first from motorist Janet Gayle, who was following the couple at the time of the crash.

She said the Egees' yellow Peugeot hatchback seemed to be travelling normally but, on the approach to a right-hand bend near Bridge Nurseries, it failed to steer or brake and left the road, becoming briefly airborne and coming to rest in a stream.

Department of Transport Roadsweeper driver John O'Hagan had been clearing the road and was travelling in the opposite direction.

He first saw the Peugeot as it careered off the road and knocked bark off a tree. Mr O'Hagan ran down the bank with two other passers by.

They freed Mr Egee, but could not help his wife. She was trapped until fire crews cut the roof off the car. Mrs Egee later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
