The chief minister of the Isle of Man should be chosen by members of Tynwald, according to Sir Miles Walker, the first person to hold the position.
South Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey recently brought the question of whether the chief minister should be publicly elected back into the spotlight.
And the House of Keys voted 12-11 to allow him to bring forward a private member's bill, which will be considered by the branches of the legislature in due course.
Mr Malarkey wants voters to have a direct say in deciding who should be the Island's senior politician, but Sir Miles says the current system doesn't exclude members of the public from having their say (play audio file):
Mr Malarkey's idea will now go out to consultation.
On Monday the Positive Action Group will be holding a meeting to debate the topic.
