John Paul's a Young Inspiration

by isleofman.com 26th November 2009

Extraordinary community service and leadership shown by 17-year-old John Paul Glover has resulted in him receiving the first Manx Inspirational Youth Award.

Douglas Neighbourhood Policing Team (DNPT) has devised the award scheme to recognise young people living anywhere on the Isle of Man whose actions significantly improve their community.

The first Inspirational Youth Award, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rushen and Western Mann, was presented to a surprised John Paul, known as JP, at Pulrose Youth Club.

Sergeant Ged Power of DNPT said, "Sometimes you come across inspirational young people who are giving a huge contribution to their community but whose extraordinary and dedicated service isn’t recognised in any formal way.

"This award was conceived to fill that gap and to give recognition to people whose acts of bravery, selflessness or leadership have a positive impact on others.

"JP is a great example to all around.  His reputation is outstanding and receiving this award has been brought about by his hard work and dedication to helping others. The award speaks for itself."

Youth Support Officer Jeanette Facey commented, "JP has been a member of Pulrose Youth Club for the last five years.  During this time he has done lots of work with the younger play service groups, organising competitions and sports for them.

"To walk in the shoes of being both a leader and setting a good example is not easy but JP has the respect and admiration of all ages at the club, young and old.

"JP has a mature head on his shoulders and is happy to take responsibility to improve the situation of young people in the area.  JP does not expect things to be given – he is happy to work and raise the funds to make things happen. JP has humility and strength rare in someone so young."

Another tribute came from Constable Kevin Newburn, of the Youth Justice Team, who said, "JP has displayed incredible leadership skills and a strength of character far beyond his years."

Presenting the first award, Laurence Skelly, whose company Manx Inspirations created the obelisk-style trophy, said, "Rotary Club of Rushen and Western Mann is delighted to support this important initiative.  Recognising young people in the community in this way can be inspirational to the younger children and provide a good role model."

Nominations for future recipients of the Manx Inspirational Youth Award can be made at any time to Sergeant Ged Power of DNPT (call 631290).
