The help available to women in the Isle of Man who suffer domestic abuse is in the spotlight today.

Around the world, organisiations which support such victims are highlighting their work as part of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

In the Isle of Man, the police Public Protection Unit brings together a range of agencies to help women escape from abusive situations and rebuild their lives.

Officers at the Unit are urging women not to delay reporting domestic abuse, which can take many forms, including psychological, emotional and financial.

Detective Inspector Gary Hardman wants women to know there's plenty of help available (play audio file):

Last year the unit had 325 reports of domestic abuse, with 82 per cent of the victims female.

On average a woman is abused 35 times before she reports it.
